The Toronto Blue Jays opened the 2025 World Series with a resounding 11–4 victory over the defending champion Los Angeles Dodgers at Rogers Centre, powered by a nine-run sixth inning that turned a tight contest into a blowout. Daulton Varsho tied the game with a two-run homer in the fourth, and the Jays erupted in the sixth with RBI hits from Ernie Clement, Nathan Lukes, and Andrés Giménez before Addison Barger crushed a grand slam to center field. Alejandro Kirk followed with a two-run homer to cap the inning, giving Toronto an 11–2 lead. The Blue Jays tallied 14 hits and committed no errors, with Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Bo Bichette also contributing in their first World Series appearance since 1993.
The Dodgers started strong, scoring in the second and third innings on RBI singles from Enrique Hernández and Will Smith. Shohei Ohtani added a two-run homer in the seventh, but the offense stalled otherwise, managing just six hits and going 1-for-6 with runners in scoring position. Blake Snell, who entered with a 0.86 ERA in the postseason, was tagged for four earned runs over five innings and took the loss. Rookie Trey Yesavage pitched 5.1 innings for Toronto, allowing two runs and striking out six, while Seranthony Domínguez earned the win in relief. Despite the loss, the Dodgers remain a formidable opponent with elite talent, and will look to bounce back in Game 2 behind Yoshinobu Yamamoto.
Dalton’s take
Although Toronto took the Dodgers to the wood shed in a dominating performance, I think ultimately, the Dodgers will bounce back. You knew Blake Snell was not going to pitch a shutdown, 7-8 inning effort everytime out there. They say the easiest game to forget for players are the blow outs.
Toronto’s offense continues to be stellar with their “bat-to-ball” approach has spearheaded their amazing run this postseason after a last place finish in the AL East last year. Vlad Guerrero Jr. continues to rake in this incredible postseason as he added two more hits last night raising his postseason average to an insane .442.
With that said, the LA Dodgers are defending World Champions and have shown an incredible instinct and magnifcent pitching which leads them to victory, even when not playing their best. The Dodgers’ offense was in hibernation for most of the NLDS against Philadelphia, with Shohei Ohtani only managing one hit, however, the Dodgers triumphed 3-1.
